It is said that Bob Toombs,
that
good ole unreconstructed
Rebel, former
general and
politician, was giving a talk
when word came in
of the Chicago fire of Oct. 8-10, 1872.
Someone apparently came to the lecturn
and told him,
or handed
him a note, that the great fire in Chicago
was finally being brought under control and
that the city still might be saved.
“But, he added, “the wind is in our
favor.”
Historians of repute have heard this. Trying to prove
